As part of this year’s National Sporting Heritage Day (30th September 2023) initiative led by Sporting Heritage, Heritage Unlocked are collaborating with Middlesbrough Libraries to help add to Middlesbrough sporting heritage collections and enhance access to a rich array of community collections that reveal the cultural, social and sporting life of the town going back to the Victorian era.
The project will also see a Sporting Heritage event held at Middlesbrough Libraries where members of local communities are invited to share their collections with the project who will digitise a selection of material that will be made accessible digitally through Middlesbrough Libraries and Heritage Unlocked.
The project has already supported the digitisation of material from the collection of interwar Middlesbrough FC captain Bobby Baxter, including photographs, telegrams, newspaper reports and correspondence from his time representing Boro and Scotland.

The Bobby Baxter Collection - powered by Heritage Unlocked
Heritage Unlocked are delighted to share highlights from the Bobby Baxter Collection online following a digitisation project working with Middlesbrough Libraries. Digitised with support from Sporting Heritage Community Grant.
Bobby Baxter
Bobby Baxter (1911-1991) was one of the outstanding centre halves to play for Middlesbrough FC. As well as playing over 200 matches for Boro, Baxter also represented Scotland, Hearts and Hibernian during his career.
Sharing the Bobby Baxter Collection
We will be sharing photographs, souvenirs, correspondence and newspaper cuttings from Bobby’s own personal collection on these pages. A selection of the material will feature in Tosh Warwick’s forthcoming biography of Baxter’s Boro teammate George Camsell.
