Middlesbrough has long been associated with a vibrant pub culture from the modern town’s early development through to recent decades. Recently, the extensive research and photographic collection of the late Les Bulman, who spent decades researching and capturing snapshots of Middlesbrough’s pubs, clubs and nightclubs, has been gifted to Teesside Archives. A recent collaboration between Heritage Unlocked, Teesside Archives and Teesside University’s Katy Parsons has now helped digitise and explore some hidden gems in the collection that provides a fascinating insight into Middlesbrough pub and club life in years gone by. This Saturday (September 11) Middlesbrough town centre will become a hive of history-inspired activity as part of the Historic England Middlesbrough High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) Programme and the annual Heritage Open Days festival.

Inspired by postcards from the past, Historic Middlesbrough will explore the events, people and places that have shaped the area over the decades.

Memories of Stockton-on-Tees in the 1970s and 1980s, to be published by Heritage Unlocked and designed by Peter Hinton Design in Summer 2021, will feature hundreds of photographs of the town and surrounding areas including Norton, Thornaby and Yarm. Oral histories and historic material from the collections of Teesside Archives will also feature alongside memories from local communities. There are also plans to work with local businesses, community groups and cultural venues as part of the wider project.

Grants will be up for grabs to help with repairs and restoration works to businesses and other premises.
The quarter was designated a Conservation Area in 1989 and centres around the Grade II-listed railway station, extending north towards Middlehaven and south towards the town centre.
The area is now set to benefit from a key funding injection through Historic England's High Street Heritage Action Zone fund.
