Historic postcards and photos of Middlesbrough wanted for new book exploring town's heritage

DO you have historic postcards of a Middlesbrough landmark or an old postcard photograph of an ancestor or street scene? Historian Dr Tosh Warwick is appealing to the public to share their collections as a part of a new book project exploring life in the town over the decades.

Historic Middlesbrough, to be published by Heritage Unlocked in time for Christmas, will feature hundreds of historic images of the area – including many previously unpublished - from Middlesbrough Libraries, Teesside Archives and private collections. Inspired by postcards from the past, Historic Middlesbrough will explore the events, people and places that have shaped the area over the decades.

Historic England’s High Street Heritage Action Zone fund to breath new life into Middlesbrough's Historic Quarter

A major funding boost is set to breathe new life into Middlesbrough's Historic Quarter.

Grants will be up for grabs to help with repairs and restoration works to businesses and other premises.

The quarter was designated a Conservation Area in 1989 and centres around the Grade II-listed railway station, extending north towards Middlehaven and south towards the town centre.

The area is now set to benefit from a key funding injection through Historic England's High Street Heritage Action Zone fund.

Port of Middlesbrough is reborn

As part of Heritage Unlocked’s work with businesses on their heritage, recently we have been working with Teesside logistics business, AV Dawson ahead of the launch of their new port facility ‘Port of Middlesbrough’.

The link up between AV Dawson and Heritage Unlocked has seen archival research undertaken on the ‘Port of Middlesbrough’ and digitisation of unique historic resources. Heritage Unlocked are now working with the company to identify opportunities to celebrate and promote AV Dawson’s history in Middlesbrough.

Heritage App plots a healthy route round historic sites

A NEW app will help Middlesbrough visitors step their way to fitness - on a series of fun treasure trails for the whole family.

Lockdown saw many residents explore our area like never before during their daily exercise. Now a number of treasure trails have been designed on the Huntee app to tap into the trend. Walkers can clock up steps in a way that interests them, including through Middlesbrough's parks and Historic Quarter.

A new online football art exhibition celebrating Boro’s former Ayresome Park home has been launched by Middlesbrough Football Club as part of a collaboration led by Heritage Unlocked’s Dr Tosh Warwick.

Bringing together work spanning the early 1900s to the modern day from acclaimed architects, cartoonists, illustrators, painters, photographers and sculptors, Art of Ayresome celebrates the people, performances and place that defined the club for almost a century.
