Discovering Hartlepool’s wartime heritage and visiting the only First World War battle site in the UK

For those outside the region, it may surprise you to learn that Hartlepool is home to the only First World War battle site in the United Kingdom. The Heugh Battery Museum, situated in the town's Headland, is dedicated to remembering the Hartlepool Bombardment of 1914 and sharing passion for local history.

The small, independent heritage site is packed with artefacts that help tell the story of the wartime life in the area and beyond. Yet, in 2019 it was nearly lost forever, only surviving through a remarkable grassroots fundraising in the local community. On the trail of George Camsell: Researching a football great

As Boro once again look to add firepower to their forward line as they seek promotion to the Premier League once more, the club can only dream of discovering a talent that once hammered home a remarkable 59 league goals in one glorious season back in 1926/27! This remarkable statistic is just one of the many legacies of Middlesbrough’s George Camsell that I have exploring during a recent placement with Heritage Unlocked and Teesside University as part of my BA (Hons) History degree. Rediscovered Voices of Teesside: Memories from the Archives

Throughout May, the ‘Rediscovered Voices of Teesside: Memories from the Archives’ link-up between Heritage Unlocked and Teesside Archives will showcase a selection of oral history recordings featuring unique, first-hand accounts of life in the area dating back to the late nineteenth century. Featured recordings focus on a range of key themes including industrial heritage, sporting memories, social conditions. and life during the World Wars.

New recordings will be added each Thursday at 5pm during Local History Month and will be available on Heritage Unlocked’s Facebook and YouTube channels.
